Telling the stories of six cities tackling energy poverty in a poster

In June, C40 Cities, a global network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities that are united in action to confront the climate crisis, approached us looking for infographic posters to showcase their ICA European pilot project at their Masterclass hosted in Lisbon in mid-September 2024. C40 Cities provided their research, project information and brand guidelines and asked us to help them communicate their findings and story so far in a visually engaging way. I worked closely with Connor Muesen and Josu Mozos to get the posters right.

In the words of C40:

“[The] ICA European pilot provides technical support to tackle energy poverty in 6 leading cities. This support is tailored to each city context, advancing innovative approaches related to relief, retrofits and renewables. Each city shares a focus on frontline communities and delivering equitable outcomes through its climate actions.”

To begin the design process, we had a meeting to discuss C40 Cities’ vision for the infographic. We discussed what I had learned from the materials they had provided, and how we might organise the information in posters. Based on this chat, I created a rough draft for feedback. This was then developed into a final design.

Infographics are a fast and fun way to communicate ideas. When working on sensitive topics, adding visuals that allow quick access to information creates powerful starting points for conversations, and hopefully positive change. I also believe that taking the time to design and illustrate information demonstrates that you care about it, which helps others care about it too.

To complement their brand guidelines I used a more loose and fun style. This is often perfect for research projects as they still feel adaptable and changeable – showing that things can still change, and are not set in stone.

It also has to be said that I loved dipping my toes into a project that is helping make the people of Europe more energy secure. It is wonderful finding ways that my skills can help create positive change in the UK and globally. 😉

“The infographics were very well received and it was a great opportunity for us to display the achievements of the cities’ projects. Thanks again for making such great infographics!”
