provide deeper understanding of the ways in which their funding streams have impacted upon museums and galleries in Scotland

Horizons Research had a great grasp on what we were seeking to achieve by reviewing the impact of our grants programmes and they have given us a report full of constructive insight that will be immensely helpful as we develop our work. They were very flexible and responsive when we slightly shifted the focus of the project due to the unpredictability of events that 2020/21 has made all too familiar and working with Robert and Lewis was very enjoyable.

The challenge

To provide MGS with a deeper understanding of the range of ways in which their funding streams have impacted upon museums and galleries in Scotland in recent years.

The Result

We first carried out a statistical analysis of key MGS funding streams, providing a descriptive numerical overview of their impacts with regards to key outcomes and objectives.

Next, we conducted an in-depth case study analysis of seven museums and galleries, involving semi-structured interviews with museum staff, to help us gain a richer understanding of how MGS funding has affected different kinds of recipient organisations in recent years.

We then undertook another statistical analysis, this time of MGS’s more recent Covid-related funding streams, before making a series of recommendations on the basis of our findings to help inform the future development of the support MGS provides to the sector.
